In time past and even most recently, it is customary that as people grow older, they remained in the family home and cared for by their relatives. This tradition is becoming obsolete and no longer the norm with more and more younger men and women moving to the urban areas for greener pastures. Consequently, there is a gradual shift with older persons moving into residential care settings. As a result of this development, many care homes are getting established in order to meet the needs of the growing population of older persons in Nigeria. While this response is a welcome development, it raises challenges in terms of the quality of care being provided and how older persons rights who reside in residential care homes/settings are protected.
In response to this challenge, The Aged Care Quality Standards and Regulations manual has been developed by the Association of Care Service Providers to Older Persons in Nigeria (ACSPOPIN) to guide practice and ensure the continued development of person-centred care.
